Planning
After freshman year, I wanted to challenge myself by joining a case competition to showcase my skills in time management, problem-solving, and communication skills. It would also be a great way to learn from like-minded individuals from various local universities. I was interested in participating in the CFA Ethics Challenge as the finance profession is fraught with ethical dilemmas. The competition embodies the mission of CFA Institute by promoting “the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence. It would allow me to gain greater knowledge of business ethics and appreciate its vital role in today’s corporate world.

Monitoring
As part of CFA Institute’s Future of Finance initiative, we learned to prepare for the ethical challenges we may face when we enter the finance and investment industry. We were given a case study and had to identify dilemmas and violations based on the CFA Institute's “Code of Ethics & Standards of Professional Conduct” within 48 hours. Afterward, we had to present our analysis and the recommended course of action over Zoom, and answer questions posed by judges. My team was one of the five teams selected to enter the Local Finals. However, we did not make it to the Regional Finals.

Evaluation
The competition has provided us with the opportunity to understand the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct and apply them to ethical dilemmas that mimic those of the real world. By analysing ethical violations and proposing curative and preventive solutions, I have gained a better understanding of the importance of ethical behaviour in the investment industry. Further, I have also learned how one small ethical lapse can lead to a slide down the proverbial ethical slippery slope. Emerging as one of the top 5 teams in Singapore would not be possible without the guidance of our Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) Faculty Advisor, Dr. Tan Eng Joo, as well as the diligence and self-motivation of my teammates, Dione Goh and Cassandra Tan. I am dedicated to upholding the highest standards of ethics and trust in the investment profession!
