The objective of this project was to create a chicken coop door that opens at sunrise and closes at sunset automatically. The automated system used Arduino as the main embedded system device. The final product featured a clean and intuitive user interface for the client, allowing them to do a variety of actions which include: a toggle switch that changes between an automatic mode and manual mode, a manual override button that will open and close the door immediately in both modes, a potentiometer to change the light level threshold for when the door will open and close, and a light that blinks when one or more of the light dependent resistors (LDR) are compromised. A key aspect of the project was that the door opens and closes based on the ambient light level as opposed to using a real-time clock, as this design parameter was specifically requested by the client.
