A diagram of boxes and connecting lines showing the progression from project aim to primary drivers to change ideas, described in detail below.
1 / 1
I created this diagram based on a quality improvement project for which I am a leader. The use of this image is public domain.

Alt Text Long Description: This driver diagram shows boxes and connecting lines that illustrate the planning process for a quality improvement project. The far left boxes contains the text "Obtain 20% adherence to standardized note templates among interns during the first 8 weeks of residency" it is under a heading that reads "Aim". Branching lines connect this box to 3 other boxes to the immediate right. From top to bottom these boxes read: "Standard Note Template", "Instruction on Template Use", and "Continuing Reminders of Template". The heading above these boxes reads "Primary Drivers". The final column of boxes is under the heading "Change Ideas" with primary drivers connecting to respective change ideas. The "Standard Note Template" driver connects to the change idea of "Committee to Design Templates for H&P and Progress Notes". the "Instruction on Template Use" driver connects to the change idea of "Intern Orientation Workshop given by Fellows". The "Continuing Reminders of Template" driver connects to the following change ideas: "Reminder added to pre-rotation email for all residents", "Reminder posted in all resident work areas", and "Faculty encouraged to look out for non-standard template usage".

I selected this date because it is directly relevant to my current quality improvement work. Creating a concept map (aka. driver diagram) for the aim, drivers, and change ideas described in my quality improvement planning report will allows me to present this information more effectively to my division and generate support for this project.

I used Microsoft powerpoint to create this visualization.

I placed summaries of the main points in squares, using dark colors to allow for readable text. These squares are connected by branching lines to illustrate my thought process from my aim to primary drivers, to change ideas.

I learned that concept maps can be used to improve the communication of complex topics. This information was previous presented in the form of a text paragraph within my planning report, but it easily fits within one image that uses lines and boxes to communicate the organization of my thought process/project plan. This process was quick and easy, and I am hopeful that this visualization will help present my project ideas more effectively than bullet points on a slide.
