Application means to actively put learned skills or knowledge into practice. At San Francisco State University, it is essential that skills learned in the Communication Studies major are carried over into the world outside of school. The Communication Studies major has taught students communication theories, concepts, and common practices to grow their knowledge about the social world. Students show that they have absorbed the information learned from class by actively applying the methods in real life. Throughout my communication studies major, I have demonstrated application of knowledge through presentations, exams, interviews, and creative performance, gathering valuable skills along the way. All these assignments strengthened my understanding of becoming an effective communicator through applying the learned communications skills to everyday situations.
Within Communication Studies, applying course content relates to personal, professional, and political contexts. I have taken classes at San Francisco State University such as Gender and Communication which has sculpted my habits to talk in a more politically correct manner so my words don’t hurt others. This class taught me how to properly address people and challenged the ideas I had on gender norms. I was able to use application from the knowledge I learned in this class and was able to apply it outside of the classroom in my personal life. I have taken Critical Approaches to Cultural Communication at SFSU which has taught me to view things through a different global and societal lens, teaching me that community life is just as important as personal, professional, or political. This class allowed me to take a step back from my everyday bubble and view things on a bigger scope. I have found when I travel internationally I reflect back on important elements I learned in this class. In my Fundamentals of Public Speaking class I learned how to apply my thoughts and observations in an organized and collected manner, which I can apply in my future professional life. Fundamentals of Public Speaking is a class that gave me confidence in doing research and presenting my ideas. Everything I have learned from each class in the Communication studies major has been applicable to my life.
The ability to apply course content to our everyday lives is significant. The practice of applying learned information from past classes makes me an active learner and sets me up to better navigate the world outside of school. Actively applying my Communication Studies major has highlighted my strong suits but has also shed light on the areas that need improvement too. I learned that people are always learning more about communication because it is ever evolving. Communication studies has further prepared me for my future endeavors in my personal, professional, and political life through the many papers I’ve written, the exams I have studied for, and the person to person interviews I have conducted. This major has prepared me for the real world. Applying the communication skills I’ve learned in previous classes proves that the information I absorbed was necessary to obtain for various social scenarios.
In my Communications Studies major, I was able to grow my general skill set by taking Fundamentals of Public Speaking. This class challenged me to face one of my fears of formally speaking in front of others. Although I used to dread the thought of this class, it turned out to be the most mind expanding experiences I’ve had in school. We were given four presentation styles throughout the semester, there was an introduction, informative, persuasive, and special occasion speech. I sculpted all the speeches around informing my peers on environmental sustainability, specifically focusing on the informative and persuasive speeches. With this assignment I applied the information I had researched and created a presentation for my class to further educate them on our world's climate crisis while simultaneously conquering my fear of public speaking.
In my Fundamentals of Public Speaking class, we were given an open ended prompt to write about anything we cared about. For all four of our presentations prompts we were given freedom to research and present on any topic of our choice. I chose the topic of climate change because I had not been taught about it in school and felt it was appropriate to educate myself on it. Since we never learned about climate change in school, it took setting aside time to research it on my own, and I felt that some of my other classmates would benefit from the information too. My first presentation was about what climate change is, the second was focused on sustainability, and the last presentation I gave was about fast fashion and how it's bad for the environment. I picked this presentation to analyze for this assignment because I love the idea of applying communication practices to our everyday lives but in this scenario I was trying to provide ways everyday people could apply sustainable living to their lives as well.
The speech I chose for this assignment was my informational presentation where I inform my peers on the encroaching climate crisis our world currently faces. The assignment was very structured but I learned I work best with clear instructions. The speech outline consisted of an introduction, mainpoint #1, #2, #3, and a conclusion to bring the presentation to a close. Within each mainpoint we had to include three subpoints and within each subpoint we had to have three sub-subpoints. For example, in this speech my second main point was about renewable energy sources. The first subpoint I touched on was on biomass energy, the second sub point was on wind powered energy, and the last point was on solar powered energy. The purpose of the sub-sub points were for further explanation and to prove credibility on the topic.
It was interesting researching and presenting on a topic that has and will have an impact on everyone. Climate crisis we face in the world is a way bigger beast than I anticipated until I started doing my research. Within my personal research, I fell in love with the idea of spreading awareness and finding ways to be proactive. In learning all this information that is so relevant to our futures and our planet, I am shocked we never had to learn about it in any of our highschool curriculum or general education classes. I became more passionate about the assignment once I realized how our everyday actions and small life choices can add up and affect this big world issue. I thought my informational presentation would be a perfect example for this application essay because I love using the skills I learned from my fundamentals of public speaking class as well as now applying the information I learned through research in living a more sustainable lifestyle.
The informational presentation provided me with the skills to research, become passionate, organize large sums of information, cite sources properly in speeches, and gain the confidence to share the information I had learned with others. I practiced my speech over and over again before it was time for class but once I was up there speaking in front of my peers I realized it wasn’t so bad because I was truly passionate about the information I was speaking on. Public speaking on this topic helped connect me to my community and provide ways that they could apply the information into their everyday life.
I used application in this assignment by applying information I learned and turning it into a presentation. Since I have taken this class I have applied the knowledge of public speaking and organizing a bulk of information to be palatable for an audience to absorb. Public speaking is a vital skill in every avenue of life whether it be personal, professional, or political. I believe it is important outside of education because it teaches you how to organize your thoughts, speak about them clearly and concisely, and how to practice verbal as well as non verbal communication.
