The first learning objective within the Global Studies major is a foundational piece to the overall understanding of the subject. Understanding the process of globalization allows one to better understand why society functions the way it does. Globalization refers to the need for collective dependance countries have on one another.
During my sophomore year, I learned the history of globalization in the SHY10601 Course: Historical & Political Geography. The required text described in detail Christopher Columbus, other figures, and events credited for discoveries that lead to the development of globalization. The text, along with the corresponding assignments and discussions gave an overview of how benefits like trade and travel are a major assets to life as we know it. On the other hand, disease was a significant and reoccurring consequence of increased globalization and population growth.
The SPS10501 Introduction to Global Studies course that I took my freshman year touched on the ways in which globalization has expanded and how society has developed around it. Specifically highlighting the international organizations created to address global challenges like trade, war, climate change, and disease. I was introduced to the United Nations and the various organizations established through it like the World Bank and the World Health Organization. Not to mention the number of treaties and agreements facilitated by the United Nations between international states. During this global studies course, I wrote a paper describing the value behind the Paris Agreement which I attached to this project.
I took an accelerated writing course my freshman year as well, SEL10703: Composition and Culture. We learned fundamental writing skills which we transferred to our research paper. I chose to write my paper on Climate Change and the specific ways the United Nations is helping. I presented my research at the 2018 Celebration of Writing Event on campus. I have attached a picture of the visual I created for the event as well as a copy of the research paper I wrote for class.
My participation in the courses structured my knowledge of globalization and the ways it continues to impact our community. This understanding allows me to consider issues like poverty on a deeper level. Globalization reminds me that all the issues we are facing today have been developing for years and are systemically rooted. More reason behind the need for collective effort to address international issues. The world will only continue to depend on each other as population grows and climate change worsens. The need for international governmental organizations and a calmative decision making body is crucial to maintaining universal peace and security.
