A recent major initiative by the Government of India has been to reduce pollution of the river Ganges. A project to support the initiative involved using a swarm of amphibious UAVs to collect water samples from the affected areas from the river. The project to develop a prototype of the said UAVs was awarded to the UAV Lab at the India Institute of Science headed by Dr. S. N. Omkar (Chief Research Scientist). As a research intern at IISc at the time, I was presented with the opportunity to work on the project. Being part of the project from conceptual design phase to the preliminary flight tests, my responsibilities included assisting the team with the conceptual design phase, performing trade-off studies for design parameters, developing the CAD model, utilizing ANSYS Workbench to perform structural analysis predominantly to ensure structural integrity while sustaining water resistance and impact during take-off and landing. The aircraft was designed to be modular with different belly attachment modules for water/land take-off and hand launch. The prototype included a detachable module designed for collecting ten 25ml samples with each flight.
