This experimentation determined the various structural strengths when both the materials and core shape of the corrugation was varied. Bio-composite hemp and prepreg carbon fiber was used as pure materials, and a trapezoidal and half circular corrugation was used for the varying shapes. Varying lengths ranging of 38.1 mm, 44.45 mm, 50.8 mm, 57.15 mm, 63.15 mm, and 69.85 mm were tested under compression loading. It was determined that in order to achieve the greatest strength for each configuration, 50.8 mm length is desired for a trapezoidal carbon fiber, 57.15 mm for circular carbon fiber, and 38.1 mm for trapezoidal hemp and 44.4 mm for circular hemp.
When comparing the two hemp bases, the circular provided a more sustainable, dampening and strain resistant mechanical properties. The trapezoidal hemp base provided the highest stiffness. Inversely, when comparing the two base types for the Carbon Fiber, the circular base resulted in a lower stiffness, likely due to its premature failure caused by delamination. When comparing the two materials, the hemp provided higher strength as it never delaminated.
